IPAM - Client Install

Overview

Microsoft introduced their IP Address Management (IPAM) module starting with Windows 2012r2.  IPAM is nice to use for looking at overall address information since all of our DHCP servers report to it.  Today, we leverage IPAM to manage our DHCP reservations.

Requirements

  • RSAT: Server Manager Installed on local workstation
  • RSAT:  IP Address Management (IPAM) Client installed on local workstation
  • AD Account added to an Access Policy in IPAM (IPAM->Access Control->Access Policies)
  • Member of the Remote Management Users group on IPAM.NIC.EDU

Installing RSAT tools (Windows 10)

  • Open the Apps & features Settings page by typing 'features' in the Windows Search bar

  • Click on Optional features

  • Click on Add a feature

  • Scroll down to the RSAT: applications and select RSAT: Server Manager and RSAT:  IP Address Management (IPAM) Client

  • If you have Server Manager already installed, it will not show up on this list
  • Once both of the features are installed launch the Server Manager tool (you can use the search bar and type "server")
  • When Server Manager is open, you will see following window

  • Click OK
  • It will take a few seconds for Server Manager to add IPAM to the as a service to manage on the right.  You will see a Refresh failed message if you are not an local administrator of the IPAM server.  Ignore that message and click on IPAM on the left window

  • You should see a list of Menu Items pop up - circled in Purple in the figure below.  If you do see that, you are ready to go.  If you do NOT, click on Connect to IPAM server circled in Red

  • If you do click on Connect IPAM server, you should see a pop up.  Click on IPAM.NIC.EDU and the click on OK

  • That should force your client to re-scan that server, and now all the menu items should populate
