Citrix ADM - Event Notifications

Summary

The Citrix Application Delivery Management (ADM) appliance is used to manage varying Citrix products like the ADC (VPX, MPX, SDX), Gateway, and SD-WAN appliances.  We have it in place to monitor our four Citrix ADC VPX's.  ADM backs up our Application Delivery Controller (ADC) configurations every 12 hours and provides dashboards for utilization of our ADC's.

The ADM is a syslog destination for all of our Citrix ADC's.  The ADC's are configured automatically to do that when you add the ADC to the ADM.  As such, ADM can send out notifications for any events that we want to be notified on.  To see the list of Events that we can create notifications on, log into the Application Delivery Management appliance (https://ctxadm.nic.edu) and navigate to Networks->Events->Event Settings.

For this example, we will walk through setting up a notification for Entity state (entitydown, entityup, entityofs)

Overview

Log into the Citrix Application Delivery Management Appliance (https://ctxadm.nic.edu)

Before we create any Event Rules, let's review our distribution lists.  I want to create a distribution list that just contains my email address so I can test notifications.

  • Navigate to System->Notifications
  • Click on the Email tab up top and click on the Add button

  • Fill out the Distribution List form.  Since this list is just for my email address, I've named it accordingly.  The mail server is defined in System->Notifications->Email Servers (you might have noticed it in the image above).

  • Now that you have created the Distribution List, we can create the Event Rule.  Navigate to Networks->Events->Rules and click on Add

  • Name the Rule you are creating and select Citrix ADC As the Instance Family
  • Scroll down to the Category so that you select the three event categories that we mentioned earlier:  entitydown, entityup, entityofs.  Since there are
  • With the appropriate categories added scroll down and click on Add Action.

Notice that by NOT selecting an Instance, this will send a notification on entity status for ALL instances of Citrix ADC's (so production and test).  If we wanted to just get notifications for a particular ADC, we would select the instance.

  • When you click on Add Action, the Add Event Action window is presented.
  • Enter the subject line you would like to see on the email
    • For this Action, I did NOT check the "Prefix severity, category, and failure object information to the custom email subject" box.
    • You can for your alert if you so choose so you don't have to open the email body to see what triggered the alert.
  • Add any additional information you would like to see in the email - I append a link to the three Citrix environments just to make it easier to pull one up if I wanted to

  • Once that's done, click  on OK and Create

Now you have created an Email Notification Event action based off an event message sent from the Citrix ADC to the Citrix ADM
