Zoom allows you to record locally to your computer or to the cloud.  This article covers both options and how to access these recordings.

Record Locally

You can record locally to your computer and set this as an option to automatically record locally when scheduling, or you can start the recording after you join the meeting.

Note: If you schedule your meeting to record automatically to your computer, you or someone you scheduled as an Alternate Host when scheduling, must join the meeting.

Schedule Meeting to Record Automatically

When scheduling your meeting to record automatically to your computer:

  1. Click Advanced Options
  2. Select the check box next to Automatically record meeting
  3. Select the radio button next to Locally
  4. (Optional) If you need to designate an Alternative host, enter their username@nic.edu under Alternative hosts. They must be NIC employees.
  5. Once you have selected all of your meeting settings, click Continue

To recording the meeting after you have joined:

  1. Click Record
  2. Click Record on this Computer

Meeting File Location

After you end the meeting, and your recording is done processing, you will get a pop up on your computer with the location that the recording is saved.  By default, all recordings will be placed in a Zoom folder found in the following file path on these devices:

  • PC: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Zoom
  • Mac: /Users/User Name/Documents/Zoom

The default save location can be changed in the Zoom Client by:

  1. Open the Zoom Client
  2. Click Settings

  1. Click the Recording tab
  2. Click Change next to Local Recording Location

Record to the Cloud

You can record to the cloud and set this as an option to automatically record to the cloud when scheduling, or you can start the recording after you join the meeting.

Note: If you schedule your meeting to record automatically to the cloud, this recording will begin the moment anyone joins the meeting.  If anyone clicks on the link outside of the scheduled time to test out their computer connection, it will create an erroneous recording of the individual that clicked on the link.  If you are not using a ‘Waiting Room’ or if you have ‘Enable join before host’ selected, you do not have to join the meeting for this to record.

After you end the meeting, and your recording is done processing, you will get an email with the share link and host only link.  By default, all Zoom cloud recordings can be found at:

Note: We have limited cloud storage with Zoom.  Please delete recordings you no longer need.

Meeting File Location - Panopto

The Panopto integration has been enabled with Zoom.  As a result, you will have a copy of the recording in the Zoom cloud and in Panopto.  We do not have the same storage limitations in Panopto.  If you delete a recording from the Zoom cloud, it will not have any effect on the recording in Panopto.  By default, a copy of the cloud recording can be found at:

Important notes:

  • Do not change the name of the folder
  • You can move the recording to another folder for organizational structure
  • Panopto integrates with Canvas
  • Recordings can be shared from Panopto
  • Panopto has better editing and captioning options
